Joseph H Pilates
In the late 1800’s, Joseph H Pilates was born in Dusseldorf, Germany and is the founder of Pilates which was then known as “Contrology”.
Joseph Pilates foundered and developed a fitness regime to overcome his fragility. He was a sickly child who suffered from rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. Pilates was able to establish a method that gave the perfect balance between both strength and flexibility by incorporating the most effective features from different methods that he experimented with.
When the First World War broke out, Pilates was teaching his techniques to detectives in Scotland Yard and due to his nationality he was interned. During his internment, Pilates used his technique to train his fellow internees. His techniques were developed with much success during this time. Joseph returned to Germany after the war.
During 1926 when on a boat emigrating to the United States Of America, Joseph met his wife Clara and with a mutual agreement on fitness, together they formed a Pilates Studio in New York. They both worked in the Studio up until 1967 when Joseph died, due to smoke inhalation from a fire in his New York Studio. Clara continued into her eighties when she passed it onto Romana Kryzanowska who continued teaching until 2004.
